This is an opportunity to widen your horizons, and gain experience being part of a multi-disciplinary team within a well-established university student wellbeing service. The University of Plymouth Student Wellbeing Service is looking for volunteers to join our ‘Listening Post’, with a unique opportunity to gain relevant experience for your CV. Now in its 8th year, the Listening Post is open from 10-4 Monday to Friday, offering a safe, non-judgemental and confidential space for students to come and talk about whatever is on their mind. “[Working as a listener] has given me a purpose and the variety of student dilemmas is far from mundane. The support from the staff is exemplary and Iam made to feel a valuable member of the team.” - Current Listening Post Volunteer Our Listeners take part in a rota covering 3-4 hours each week, term-time only. We have a choice of morning and afternoon shifts on weekdays. You’d be offering students a calm listening ear, and where needed, signpost students to the University’s suite of support services including counselling and mental health services. As a listener, you have the support of a trained member of staff, usually one of our core counsellors, offering a 20 minute debrief with you after each session. In return for your voluntary work supporting students you will: Be provided with free training to help settle you into the role including safeguarding training, listening skills and prevent Gain transferable skills and experience for your own career development Have access to continued professional development via University staff training courses In your role as a listener at the university, you will encounter people from many walks of life, different backgrounds, and with diverse things to share. To ensure we meet the needs of all students accessing our service it is important that our volunteers are representative of our student population. We currently have a disproportionately low representation of volunteers who identify as BAME and LGBT and therefore we would particularly welcome applicants from these groups.
